Provisional Services Overview

Provisional services are temporary, time-limited supports provided by San Andreas Regional Center (SARC) to address an individual’s immediate health, safety, or supervision needs when other long-term services are not yet available. These services are designed to prevent harm, reduce risk, and maintain stability while permanent or generic resources are being explored, developed, or approved.

How to Get Help

  • Talk with your Service Coordinator if there is an urgent or immediate need

  • Provisional services are discussed, authorized, and monitored through the Individual Program Plan (IPP) process

How the Regional Center Helps

SARC supports individuals by identifying short-term needs and coordinating provisional services when appropriate, while continuing to work toward long-term solutions through:

  • Generic resources

  • Ongoing Regional Center services

  • Community-based supports

Provisional services are not intended to replace permanent services and are reviewed regularly.

Your Service Coordinator

Each individual is assigned a Service Coordinator who helps determine whether provisional services are appropriate. The Service Coordinator:

  • Assesses immediate health and safety risks

  • Documents the need for provisional services in the IPP

  • Coordinates temporary supports and services

  • Monitors service effectiveness and timelines

  • Works toward transitioning the individual to long-term or generic resources

Important to Know

  • Provisional services are temporary and time-limited

  • Services must address an immediate need related to health, safety, or supervision

  • Provisional services require ongoing review and justification

  • Long-term solutions must be actively pursued while provisional services are in place

Provisional Services May Include

Depending on individual needs, provisional services may include:

  • Temporary supervision or staffing supports

  • Short-term behavioral or crisis-related services

  • Interim day program or activity supports

  • Temporary in-home supports

  • Short-term residential or placement supports

  • Emergency or gap-filling services while permanent supports are arranged

Every Plan Is Different

  • Provisional services are based on individual circumstances and immediate risk

  • Two individuals with similar needs may receive different provisional supports

Transition to Long-Term Services

Provisional services are regularly reviewed through the IPP process. As long-term services or generic resources become available, provisional services are reduced or discontinued, and ongoing supports are adjusted to meet the individual’s needs.
